Summary Review: Publicity is more interesting than the film
Like many films that appeared in the early 70s and raised a stink for one reason or another - the publicity surrounding the Findlay's film Snuff is more interesting than the film itself.

In fact, this film - which supposedly depicted the actual dismembering of a young girl - caused such a fuss when it played in New York that the mayor demanded that the perpetrators be captured and prosecuted. That is, of course, until the producers admitted that the film was a fraud and produced the dead actress for all to see.

This film is nothing more than a late 60s Hell's Angels biker movie with a tacked on ending in which the film's director disembowels a young blond girl. Not sexual, and hardly interesting - the snuff bit of the film is hardly impressive as far as either shock or special effects.

Of course, you have to sit through a turgid tale of bikers and drug smuggling to even get to this bit - and it just isn't worth it.

This was cut when submitted in 2004 with the following BBFC explanation:

Company chose to cut sight of a forceful head butt to accord with BBFC Guidelines on imitable techniques at PG. A 15 uncut was available.

On the football field, a young man (not the hero, but a role model) delivered a powerful head butt to the conceited villain and then explained that sometimes it is the only way to resolve matters. This scenario is an excellent example of why we might intervene at 'PG'. Encouraging children to use head butts, especially on the football field, as the best way to resolve a dispute, is a matter of serious concern.

Summary Notes

After a cavalry group is massacred by the Cheyenne, only two survivors remain: Honus, a naive private devoted to his duty, and Cresta, a young woman who had lived with the Cheyenne two years and whose sympathies lie more with them than with the US government. Together, they must try to reach the cavalry's main base camp. As they travel onward, Honus is torn between his growing affection for Cresta, and his disgust for her anti-American beliefs. They reach the cavalry campsite on the eve of an attack on a Cheyenne village, where Honus will learn which side has really been telling him the truth.

  • Come Back Peter
Some Like it Sexy is a 1969 UK sex comedy by Donovan Winter.
With Erika Bergmann, Penny Riley and Christopher Matthews. IMDb
Originally filmed as Come Back Peter which was passed X uncut for 1969 and 1974 cinema release. In 1971 the director added extra sex scenes for continental film sales. This longer version was later released on UK VHS in 1990 and 1995 but suffered BBFC cuts. Reported to be uncut for the 2011 DVD.
Summary Review: Collinson Twins
A view from the sixties with the main man driving around London in his e-type picking up girls at will.

The film comes from a pretty tame period in terms of sex, but was perked up with a new version in the mid 70's. Nudity was added to the old sex scenes via body doubles. Most notably, new material was added featuring the Collinson Twins, Mary and Madeline. They at least could do their own nudity.

From IMDb. New scenes with the Collinson twins were edited in, together with some extra sex scenes involving body doubles for a re-issue.

From a submission by Donovan Winter included in the 2012 Nucleus release in which he spoke of opportunities at the Canne film festival in 1971:

Several overseas sales ensued, immediately so in France. But now I found myself up against a dichotomy. The 'sex' in the film was only titillating rather than aggressive. It was too soft for Germany and Scandinavia where they had progressed beyond that and demanded more. We need as much sex as possible in the film. While in other more reserved countries there was still too much! It seemed you just couldn't win. The distributor demanded explicit scenes which he could cut if necessary as required by the judges.

I left the print with the French distributor in Paris - which he required for dubbing. Then I returned to London to set to work once again. The additional 'sex' scenes necessary barely required scripting. All I needed were my actors, or doubles for them, to simulate the act of copulation. I went back into four of the locations and shot another eight minutes of simulated sex which I tagged on to the scenes already in the can. I never dared show them to the British censor, of course! But they did enable me to sell the film to more countries like Germany and the U.S., although I was told they were still not hard enough for Scandinavia.

From IMDB. To attract a teen audience, this movie was edited from the R Rated Killer Cut Version to the PG-13 rated Theatrical Version:

  • A different opening to the movie. This establishes how the scarred and masked men are killers. They attack a girl who has the same symbol that is stamped onto her hand as Cassie and the others. The killers grab her, throw her to the ground, tape her mouth shut, and then slit her wrists, squeezing the blood out of the cut.
  • A briefly shown scene of a girl with a see-through top at the Rave party.
  • The brief sex scene between Cassie and Sean is stronger. It shows her remove her top (facing away from the camera).
  • The lesbian scene between Annabel and Raven is stronger too. They are shown kissing more graphically (licking each others tongues), and then Annabel rips open Raven's shirt which shows her breasts to the camera. Annabel then very briefly caresses Raven's breasts before running away.
  • Cassie opens up a locker to find that her dinosaur that she grabbed in the beginning has been decapitated with blood all over the inside of the locker and on the dinosaur's head and body.
  • The scene where Cassie is chased by the killer has more blood. After she has smashed the light bulb over the killers head and gotten grabbed by him again, she plunges the light bulb through his stomach and it shows it come out the other side. Lots of blood then pours out of the tube onto the ground.
  • The scene where Cassie dreams that the drill goes near her head has been made longer. It actually shows the drill go into her head, which causes blood to come out.
  • The scene where Annabel and Raven are in the bathroom at the Rave has more to it. Annabel is seen standing up with her legs spread to Raven. Raven brings her head back from being close to between Annabel's legs, and says love these unisex bathrooms .

The BBFC cuts were:

  • Cuts were required to remove a detailed focus on a particular suicide technique.

See pictorial cuts details from movie-censorship.com . The distributors deleted the entire pre-credits scene depicting a suicide. The distributors had in fact 3 options:

  • No cuts and the film would be banned
  • 16s of cuts to remove just the vertical cutting details of the suicide but leaving the suicide otherwise in place. This would then have been 18 rated. (Suicide in films for under 18s is a very sensitive area these days).
  • Deleting the suicide film entirely resulted in a 15 rating.

See article from starburstmagazine.com :

The BBFC demanded 16 seconds be removed from the two and a half minute scene in order to be granted a rating, but the required edits ended up masticating the opening to such an extent Carolyn decided it would be better to just remove it entirely rather than risk it coming across as precisely the kind of watered down, almost romanticised portrayal of suicide she was intentionally trying to avoid. As this was by far the most graphic scene of the whole film, without it the rating ended up downgraded to a 15.

Previously the director wrote that the BBFC had requested cuts. See article from uk.movies.yahoo.com : Cuts requested

The BBFC have requested cuts be made to the British-made supernatural romance Soulmate .

The feature debut of writer-director Axelle Carolyn, Soulmate stars Anna Walton as a grieving widow who seeks solace in a remote country cottage - but finds it occupied by a ghost (Tom Wisdom), with whom she gradually builds a friendship.

The source of the trouble, it seems, is the film's opening scene, in which Walton's distraught character attempts suicide by slitting her wrists in the bath; a fairly distressing sight, for sure, but hardly without precedent.

However, the BBFC said that this constitutes imitable behaviour with the potential to cause harm, and has asked for sequence to be re-edited before before granting a certificate.

This issue has cropped up before and presumably the suicide depicts an effective method of suicide that is not widely known. The BBFC cuts are intended to try and keep it that way, albeit that the secret is largely let out of the bag already.

Axelle Carolyn is not best pleased about the BBFC's stance. She voiced her anger on Twitter.

BBFC has required 4 long sets of cuts for SOULMATE. Otherwise it's banned. Take that, splat pack: I made a video nasty without even trying. -

The BBFC says, Imitable behavior, potential harm. Basically my opening scene could cause a wave of suicides in the UK.

If RE-ANIMATOR was shot on Long Island for the price of a used car, THE SOULTANGLER would be the result. Insane genius Dr. Anton Lupesky has developed a drug that allows users to inhabit corpses and transform into rabid maniacs! Can reporter Kim Castle stop the carnage and save our species from annihilation?! This epic of outsider filmmaking is a dream-like wasteland that's punctuated with severed heads, evil beasties, and hooded slashers. Filmed in basements and garages, director Pat Bishow's earnest devotion to storytelling in the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft elevates THE SOULTANGLER beyond kitsch and into heavenly territory.

US: MPAA R Rated for:

MPAA Censors in the US insisted on cuts to dialogue describing bestiality, oral and anal sex in order for the film to receive a 'R' rating.

From ATTIC the cuts include:

  • In the class room, the dialogue which Cartman yells to Mr Garrison with a megaphone was originally How would you like to gargle rat jiz?, and not the milder How would you like to suck my balls?.
  • The dialogue in the school counsellor's office by Mrs Cartman of what is "fisting": That's when the fist is inserted into the anus, or vagina for sexual pleasure was changed to a dialogue about licking ass.
  • The "Scheisse" video was originally a video of Mrs Cartman sucking a horse's dick.
  • Also, The MPAA demanded that the film's title be changed (they have a policy that all titles that pass them have to be rated 'G' and the word 'hell' was not allowed). The title was changed from "South Park - All Hell Breaks Loose" to its present. Very ironically, the MPAA didn't get the penis reference in the present title, and approved it!

There's no sign of this censored material being restored and so the R rated version has become the definitive

The two controversial episodes titled 200 and 201 have at least been included, but censored as per the latest TV version.

Originally the religious figure of Mohammed was depicted as a teddy bear when shown in episode 200. After kicking off a bit of a fuss, in the second part, 201, all shots of the character were obscured by a black silhouette marked CENSORED. Every mention of Mohammed was also bleeped out.

The two part episode in question features a typically convoluted plotline in which Tom Cruise (previously pilloried as gay and for being a scientologist) rounds up 200 other celebrities who have been targets of the show's satire in order to launch a class-action defamation suit against the town of South Park. Cruise also wrangles Muhammad into his scheme, secretly motivated by a desire to harness the prophet's goo , which grants immunity to ridicule. Throughout, Muhammad is dressed in a bear suit, an ironic nod to the prohibition on showing images of Islam's founding father. and the blasphemy accusation against a British teacher in Sudan who let her class of kids name a teddy bear Mohammed.

Note that this release nominally runs for 74m but this includes padding as kindly described by Mike:

0.00-03.52 is a promo reel for some of the label's other releases.

03.52 - 18:02 is a short film about a woman who has an unfortunate habit of chopping men's heads off while having sex with them. No idea what that is, no title is given. I thought at first it might have been the start of the main feature since a chainsaw appears at one point, but since everyone is speaking English rather than Spanish and the actors are American, it turned out not to be.

18:02 main film begins. The scene cut from the UK release appears right at the start, even before the credits.

66:05 main film appears to finish. The next few minutes are outtakes and one of the director's music videos, but then 2-3 minutes of footage appears which I could have sworn were part of the original film. I've watched an online version of the film where that section appears after the closing credits.

18:02 - 66:05 is 48 minutes and 3 seconds. If you add on the 2-3 minutes at the end and regard it as part of the main film, that makes it just over 51 minutes. The UK release was 51 minutes, I believe, and was only cut by 32 seconds, so it's quite likely this is 51-52 minutes and the full version.

But as you can see, it's quite hard to tell because they've made a complete mess of the release. You can't even read the English subs properly as they frequently fall off the bottom of the screen.

The BBFC further commented in the Annual Report covering 2014:

The Spanish Chainsaw Massacre is a Spanish film in which a heavy metal band find themselves in a village of cannibals after their van breaks down. The BBFC removed a sequence of sadistic and sexualised violence involving a child before passing the film 18.

The film also includes scenes of characters being torn open and having their intestines pulled out, a penis being bitten and torn off, and a foetus being pulled from a woman's body.

Thanks to Mike who adds:

The US DVD contains the full version, and I can confirm that the cut is to a scene fairly early on in which a woman with breasts exposed is chased through woodland by a local and is then beaten repeatedly over the head with a rock while a girl (child) is watching a few feet away.

Frankly the BBC made it sound much worse than it is. It's only sexualised in that the victim's shirt is open, and the sadism is due to the number of blows to the head. The gore effects are pretty poor anyway. Nothing sadistic is done to the child, and and nothing sexualised happens to her either. She just stands there watching. It's actually quite a notable BBFC decision in that they very rarely cut scenes in which a child actor is exposed to violence on the set. But that's what happened here.

The inspiration behind this series is the Thracian Gladiator Spartacus, who led a slave uprising against the Roman Republic. The Thracians had been persuaded by Claudius Glaber to serve as auxiliaries in the Roman legions in a campaign against the Getae, who had often plundered Thracian lands. However after Glaber reneges on the deal and switches his attentions from the Getae to attack Mithridates in Asia Minor, the Thracians feel betrayed and mutiny. Captured by Glaber, Spartacus is condemned to death as a Gladiator, whilst his wife Sura is condemned to slavery. Spartacus, however, proves to be a formidable gladiator, and defeats the four gladiators tasked with executing him. He becomes a favorite of the crowd, leading Senator Albinius to commute his death sentence to a life of slavery. Spartacus is purchased by Batiatus for gladiator training, who promises to help him find Sura if he proves himself in training. As the series develops, the story follows the betrayals and machinations...

The plan is to acquire sufficient funds to acquire ships from Silesian pirates who could then transport them to other lands from Brandisium in the south. The Roman Senator Gracchus schemes to have Marcus Publius Glabrus, Commander of the garrison of Rome, lead an army against the slaves who are living on Vesuvius. When Glabrus is defeated his mentor, Senator and General Marcus Licinius Crassus is greatly embarrassed and leads his own army against the slaves. 147:58s UK: Passed 12/12A for moderate violence, threat after BBFC advised pre-cuts for: The BBFC commented:
This film was originally seen for advice in an unfinished version. The company was advised it was likely to be classified 15 but that their preferred 12A could be obtained by making reductions:
  • in a scene of violence (Mr. Hinx gouging out the eyes of another Spectre agent).

    and

  • in another scene showing the aftermath of a violent act (Aftermath of Mr. White's suicide).

When the film was submitted for formal classification, acceptable reductions had been made in both scenes and the film was classified 12A.

Spectre was top with 40 complaints. The BBFC commented in its 2015 Annual Report:

Complaints about Spectre focussed on scenes of violence. During postproduction, the distributor sought advice on whether it could secure a 12A classification and if so, how. One scene involving an eye-gouging was slightly too strong for the company's preferred 12A classification. We therefore suggested reductions to this scene. What remains in the classified version of the scene is a brief implication of what is happening, with only limited visual detail.

There is also a torture scene. Although the idea is unpleasant there is limited detail depicted. Given the lack of detail in the scene and the context of an action film featuring a larger-than-life hero character who always defeats his enemies, this moderate violence is acceptable at 12A.

Another scene, showing the bloody aftermath of a suicide, was similarly reduced.

The BBFC further commented in a case study:

Columbia submitted Spectre to the BBFC in August 2015, for advice on whether it was likely to meet the BBFC Guidelines criteria for 12A. At this stage the film had no title sequence, end credits were missing and some special effects work was unfinished, but the Senior Compliance Officers (then Senior Examiners) who viewed it noted it was largely complete. The BBFC advised that a 15 rating seemed the most probable outcome, citing strong bloody detail during a scene of eye-gouging and further bloody detail in the aftermath of the suicide of a terminally ill man.

The distributor chose to reduce or remove elements of these scenes. BBFC staff viewed a re-edited version and advised that, now without strong bloody detail, the film was likely to be classified at 12A.

The eye-gouging in the version seen for advice showed a man embedding his thumbs in a victim's eye-sockets, the withdrawal of the thumbs, and sight of the bloody injury aftermath. The 12A version of the film retained only an establishing shot of the thumbs being inserted, together with a reverse angle shot from behind the victim's head, with thumbs emerging slightly bloody.

The original suicide scene in the version submitted for advice showed a man place a gun underneath his chin and fire, with a spray of bloody mist. Two subsequent shots showed what might have been interpreted as brain tissue hanging down from the back of his head. In the 12A version of the film, the suicide took place off-screen, and the injury detail was reduced.

Spectre also features a scene of torture in which Bond is strapped to a chair while a villain pierces his head with a micro-drill. The scene features no graphic sight of blood or injury detail, and instead uses sound and Bond's facial expressions to suggest his pain. A broadly similar torture scene is present in a previous Bond film 203 Casino Royale , also rated 12A 203 and, given the lack of detail, and the audience's expectation that Bond will survive such threats, the BBFC considered the scene to be within the 12A Guidelines for depictions of violence.

US: Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some disturbing images, sensuality and language.
  • 2019 MGM [007 The Daniel Craig Collection] R0 4K Blu-ray at US Amazon

It has been confirmed that the BBFC cut version has been distributed worldwide.

Summary Review : Saucy Holland Days

Three young Dutch amateur dirt bike motorcycle racers each fall in love with a young woman who, with her brother, works at a concession stand at the races. Everyone is looking for a better life. The young woman wants out of the business and away from her brother. The motocross racers want to make their marks as professional racers, like their hero, played by Rutger Hauer.

The MGM DVD thankfully restores the 8 minutes of "graphic" sexuality (not really that shocking to Europeans) that was excised in order to earn an "R" rating and make the film more palatable to our "puritan" American tastes.

The film was heavily criticized in Holland. Many critics accused the film of being anti-women, anti-gay, anti-invalid, and anti-Chistian. They also called it devoid of morals and needlessly decadent. This criticism was one of the contributing factors in Paul Verhoeven's decision to begin making films in America rather than his native land.

Never cut but had a profound effect on UK film censorship at the 12 level. The BBFC originally gave the film a 12 rating but this was unpopular as under 12s were banned. Several councils overruled the BBFC with a PG rating. The BBFC responded by fast tracking the already planned introduction of the 12A which allowed younger children to watch the film if accompanied by adults.

Before the film's British theatrical release in June 2002, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gave the film a 12 certificate.

Due to Spider-Man's popularity with younger children, this prompted much controversy. The BBFC defended their decision, arguing that the film could have been given a 15 .

Despite this, North Norfolk and Breckland District Councils, in East Anglia, changed it to a PG , and Tameside council, Manchester, denoted it a PG-12 . The U.S. rated it PG-13 for stylized violence and action .

In late August, the BBFC relaxed their policy to 12A , leading Sony to re-release the film with the new rating.

  • 2004 cinema release
From the BBFC website: IMAX
When classifying a film for cinema release the Board carefully considers the impact of the special effects and sound track on the likely audience. In the case of SPIDER-MAN 2 the Board believes that the huge screens and powerful sound systems in IMAX cinemas, designed to deliver an intense cinematographic experience, mean that some young children may find the film more 'scary' than they would if they saw it at a 'traditional' cinema.

The '12A' rating does not mean that young fans cannot see the film as children under 12 years of age can see a '12A' rated film if they are accompanied by an adult. The '12A' rating for IMAX cinemas is designed to help parents with young or sensitive children to make sure that their trip to the cinema is not a distressing experience.

From IMDb. This cut mostly utilizes an unused score, alternate edits of scenes, a restructured story, and scenes both added and removed throughout. With all of these changes, this version runs 2 minutes shorter than the theatrical version.

See article from comicbookmovie.com :

While the changes are small in scale they do make some differences. Those small scenes did add some things to make my experience one I was happy to sit through.

Overall is Spider-Man 3 The Editors Cut better than the theatrical cut? I would say yes, while it is only better by a small margin it is still enough for me to recommend you watch this film over the original if you decide to re watch the film at all. Characters are improved on if only slightly and if anything the new score for the film is a welcome addition.

See pictorial version details from movie-censorship.com :

The most noticeable difference is probably Aunt May giving Peter a pep talk and Harry's butler who convinces him to help Peter after all in the Theatrical Version. This has dramaturgical consequences because it now perfectly illustrates that the two main characters act on their own.

Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer's morbid game.

The BBFC commented:

Distributor chose to make cuts to achieve a 12A classification, removing:
  • focus on knives as a group of hoodlums surround and threaten a woman;
  • sight of the hero mounting his foe on the ground and repeatedly punching him in the head;
  • sight of a severed finger flying towards the camera
  • part of a man's rib-cage embedded in the ground.

A 15 certificate without cuts was available.

The BBFC further explained their 12A cinema certificate:

The Spirit is an action adventure film based on a comic, and directed by Frank Miller in a similar style to SIN CITY or 300. It was classified '12A' for moderate violence.

In The Spirit , we see comic book characters fighting each other with a range of weapons including pistols, knives and machine guns. There is also hand-to-hand fighting throughout the film, including sight of punches and kicks to the face. There is occasional sight of blood during the film, such as when The Spirit pulls a knife from his leg after being attacked or when we see a body lying on a morgue slab with entry wounds in the torso.

At '12A', the BBFC's Guidelines state that 'violence must not dwell on detail' and 'there should be no emphasis on injuries or blood'. During The Spirit , the violence is relatively frequent but is shown with a style that clearly denotes the comic book origins of the story - the characters are larger than life, and much of the film is in black and white with dashes of colour, so that in the rare instances blood is shown it may be bright red with everything surrounding it in monochrome. While such a style draws attention to the blood, it does so in a manner befitting a graphic novel rather than in a realistic sense, and furthermore there is little actual detail shown during the violence. The comedic slant of the film also highlights the sense of the fantastical throughout.

The film includes brief nudity during a scene in which a female character is ordered to put her hands behind her head - she does so and her towel slips off. There is no focus on her naked body other than a blurred frontal shot in the background & brief rear nudity.

The film also contains mild language such as 'son of a bitch', 'piss me off' and 'bastards'.

uncut Japanese anime by Hayao Miyazaki

The main feature is uncut but the DVD extras have been causing confusion as pointed out by Anthony:

In the PG-rated Optimum Releasing release from 2004, the extra bonus feature The Making Of Spirited Away : Nippon TV Special had 7 seconds cut to remove the following subtitles just over 16 minutes into the documentary, in which one of Miyazaki's animators' dialogue is translated as Haven't you finished yours yet, boss?' to which Miyazaki's subtitled reply is Fuck! I'm working my arse off here! . The footage is still there, as is the spoken Japanese dialogue and Japanese subtitles, but the two lines of dialogue lose those English subtitles.

In the 12-rated Optimum Releasing release from 2005, the aforementioned two subtitles do indeed appear, although the extras disc itself still has the previous release's design complete with the original PG certificate, despite the fact that the casing clearly carries a 12 certificate. Whoops!

Splash is a 1984 US comedy romance by Ron Howard
Starring Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah and Eugene Levy IMDb

Uncut and PG rated by the MPAA and BBFC, however Disney decided to make cuts to brief glimpses of nudity when the film was published on the streaming service Disney+.

Censored on Disney+

April 2020, thanks to Alex. See article from theverge.com

There's a scene in Splash where a young Tom Hanks watches a beautiful naked mermaid run off into the ocean from which she came. In the original version, the camera follows Hanks' gaze, showing a brief glimpse of a naked butt. Splash received a PG rating because of the shot (and the insinuation that came with it), but people watching the movie on Disney Plus are greeted with an entirely different version of the scene.

In the re-edited version, Disney used CGI hair to cover actress Daryl Hannah's body.

A Disney representative confirmed to The Verge that a few scenes from Splash were slighted edited to remove nudity, but they did not specify when the edits were made. The representative also confirmed that Splash's rating would revert from the initial Disney+ rating of PG-13 to Disney+ PG.

Controversy

See article from popculture.com

A previously withdrawn episode of SpongeBob SquarePants has just made its way back to streaming. Mid-Life Crustacean , which was first released in January 2003, is available to stream on Paramount+ through Amazon Prime Video after it was taken out of TV rotation in 2018 and subsequently pulled from the Paramount+ library in 2021.

The episode proved to be controversial, with some claiming it to be unsuitable for the young audience the show is geared towards. The episode finds three of the show's male characters -- Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, and Patrick -- going on a Panty Raid, involving them breaking into a woman's house to steal her underwear.

Several years later, in 2022, the episode was scrubbed from Paramount+. That latter move sparked outrage among SpongeBob Squarepants fans, eventually leading to the launch of a fan-created Change.org petition calling on Nickelodeon to Bring Back Mid-Life Crustacean! The petition argued that Nickelodeon already knows that a large portion of the fanbase is composed of nostalgic adults, and as such could have been bumping up the rating on this episode or include a warning or something else.

While Mid-Life Crustacean has returned to streaming, it seems that another episode, Kwarantined Crab, is still on the banned list. That episode was pulled in 2021 after it aired as part of SpongeBob's 12th season amid the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of anti-Asian violence. The episode finds the Krusty Krab going under emergency quarantine after the Health Inspector finds a Clam Flu case in the restaurant. As anxiety grows among those locked in the Kruty Krab, those who are assumed to have the virus are shunned and isolated, with Mr. Krabs locking SpongeBob, Patrick, and several other characters in the restaurant's freezer. In a statement confirming the episode was pulled, Nickelodeon said, We have decided to not air it due to sensitivities surrounding the global, real-world pandemic.

Review from AnimeNation :

Spy of Darkness is in many respects a typical tentacle hentai show. Scientists have been working on creating a new type of cyborg, and have ended up creating what they call a BioBorg, codenamed Dragon. This tall dark and studly creature is all green, very powerful and has one flaw; he's insatiable when it comes to sex due to a fault in the gene coding.

Vanessa Hammer who has decided to free Dragon and use him for her own purposes. While she considers him nothing more than merchandise, she's got no problem with taking advantage of his special skills. And his skills are rather good, going by her expressions. When he gets overly excited, tentacles begin to sprout from all over his body, and the more he evolves, the more tentacles grow from him.

The show plays out in the end in some distinctly non-standard ways with the characters, leaving me surprised at how it was done and enjoying it more for doing it that way. Spy of Darkness is a simple straightforward little action hentai with tentacles and plenty of non-consensual sequences, but it's quite well done.

The BBFC commented:

The Board's classification Guidelines, the result of an extensive process of public consultation, clearly set out our serious concerns about the portrayal of sexual violence in films and videos. On page 9 it is stated that "Where the portrayal eroticises or endorses sexual assault, the Board is likely to require cuts at any classification level... any association of sex with non-consensual restraint, pain or humiliation may be cut." On page 20, under 'Rejects', the Board also identifies as of the "greatest concern: graphic rape or torture, sadistic violence or terrorisation, ...sex accompanied by non-consensual pain, injury or humiliation...".

The Board's strict policy on sexual violence is based in part upon the issue of public acceptability and in part upon the issue of harm. With regard to public acceptability, it is clear that the British public are very concerned by the depiction of sexual violence, and feel that any such depictions should be handled sensitively and with great care. The exploitation of sexual violence for titillation is clearly regarded as unacceptable - and potentially dangerous - by the majority. This was illustrated both by the findings of our 1999-2000 public consultation process and by a separate research exercise into public attitudes to sexual violence undertaken in 2001-2.

With regard to the issue of harm there is a substantial body of media effects research suggesting the harm that may be caused by exposure to such material. There is a large and persuasive body of evidence over the years from respected and responsible researchers that shows that, where violence and sex are intermingled, the effects upon some people are likely to be harmful. In line with its specific duties under the VRA the Board is required to treat material of this kind very carefully indeed.

The film was originally released in the US uncut with an MPAA R rating. Shortly after the distributor chose to make cuts for an MPAA PG rated re-rlease. The cut version was later released on VHS but DVD releases have been the uncut version. Running time suggest that it was the uncut version that has been released in the UK, originally with an X rating for cinema and an 18 rating for VHS and DVD. The rating was downrated to BBFC 15 for 2013 Blu-ray.
Summary Notes

One of the most original and entertaining of the revenge-of-nature films that characterised mid-1970s American horror, Squirm begins with a pylon being downed by a thunderstorm, sending millions of volts into the wet, conductive mud, which naturally gives hundreds of thousands of its wriggly inhabitants an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

And since the accident has also inconveniently cut off the electricity to Fly Creek, Georgia, its population could hardly be more vulnerable when the sun goes down. Houses can be barricaded against most intruders, but what happens when they're small enough to get into the water supply?

Writer-director Jeff Lieberman (who also made the cult classics Blue Sunshine and Just Before Dawn ) achieves a near-perfect blend of knowing wit and good old-fashioned scares, with make-up genius Rick Baker ( An American Werewolf in London ) on hand for some of the memorably disgusting special effects.

Summary Review: Highly dubious taste

This is a sleazy WW2 Nazi camp movie which plays more like a black comedy. In this film the poor female POW's get raped and groped by all and sundry at the camp.

They are subjected to some inexplicable experiments, which often seem to involve forced copulation with a group of Nazi studs. The purpose of the experiments is to find the best stud from this Aryan select and transfer his balls onto the camp commandant who, as we discover, lost his when a Russian woman he was raping bit his off.

Now, the above synopsis may well make the film sound deeply depraved and offensive. Well, it is sleazy and in highly dubious taste but the execution of the film is so amateurish and unrealistic that it really sounds a lot worse than it actually is.

Garish video magazine adverts featuring the iconic VHS cover art for SS Experiment Camp have been attributed as kicking off the video nasty moral panic. The other 2 films cited are Cannibal Holocaust and Driller Killer.

UK: Passed 18 uncut for strong violence, sex and nudity for:

US: Uncut and MPAA Unrated for:

The BBFC had few qualms in passing it uncut for sale in the UK with the following justification (reproduced from one of the newsgroups) :

The content of the film is in fact very mild and poorly executed. If anything, it was the title of the film and its original packaging that led to difficulties, rather than the content. The idea of the film may, of course, be offensive to some but that is not a good enough reason to cut or reject it. We would only cut or reject a film for adults if the content was illegal or harmful. SS Experiment Camp is neither illegal or harmful, just tasteless.

The uncut region 2 DVD should have been available in Feb 2006, BUT due to some unfortunate mistake in production, the film actually release was a 1981 soft porn film, Love Camp, starring Laura Gemser. Sorted by the reissue in April 2006.

Summary Review : Achtung! Cheese Alert!

Top Nazi officials, intent on rooting out traitors and those in the military who may be plotting to overthrow Adolf Hitler, recruit and train a group of beautiful prostitutes whose mission is to use any means necessary to uncover plots against the Fuhrer.

A heaped platter of cheesy chuckles served up by a harem of naked Euro-sluts.

Other than running about 10 minutes too long (director Bruno Mattei, who also co-scripted, tacks on a pointless soliloquy by a minor character near the end), SS GIRLS hits all the right Eurotrash notes. There's oodles of female nudity (with some lesbianism and S&M in the mix), a number of scenes in very bad taste (that thankfully don't get TOO revolting), and loads of unintentional humor.
