The BBFC commented:

• Given that the basic theme of the film had been accepted on VHS back in 1987, the main issue this time was whether the more explicit moments of sexual detail could now be reinstated. Although some of the sexual detail was quite explicit, none of it was unsimulated (the beast's spectacular ejaculation obviously involved the use of prosthetics). Accordingly it was passed 18 uncut.

This shortened version is accepted as the Director's Cut and is generally preferred over the longer Complete Version. All sex scenes are intact but there are a few scenes missing (for pacing reasons). Thanks to Marc:

1. Missing scene: Ifany sneeking into the bathroom, after Mathurin has been groomed by his father, in order to stuff clumps of Mathutin's hair into an envelope.
2. Missing scene: Ifany bringing the envelope of Mathurin's hair into Duc Rammondelo de Balo's office, where he is dismissed and the Duc sniffs at it.
3. Missing scene: The cook sets the table while singing, prior to the farcical meal that the Mathurin, his father and the guests attend.
4. Better news is that the scene near the end of the film, when the Cardinal arrives at the family home and tutors his underling on the perils of bestiality, is included

The BBFC still felt that the bestiality theme was contentious and that the dream sequence may feed into the rape myth that women secretly desire to be raped.

Ultimately, it was concluded that the very fantastical nature of the sequence and its clearly symbolic nature mitigated against any likelihood of harm.

The film had previously been pre-cut to address James Ferman's concerns of:

• sight of horses copulating in explicit detail;
• a line drawing of a woman being mounted by an animal;
• close shots of masturbation
• close shots of genital detail;
• the more explicit moments in the dream sequence , including the beast rubbing his penis against a tree, the beast masturbating and placing his head between a woman's legs, and sight of the beast's semen flowing over the woman's buttocks, breasts and stomach.

The film opened at the Prince Charles cinema in September 1978. Following public complaints about the film, possibly provoked by some sensationalist press reporting, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was asked to consider a prosecution of the film under the Obscene Publications Act. In the event, following consultation with legal advisers, the DPP concluded that there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction against the cut version of the film and no further action was taken.

Distributor pre-cuts reduced the length of a masturbation scene and removed some of the more explicit shots from the dream sequence, in which the heroine imagines having intercourse with the beast .

In spite of the reductions already made, the Board was sceptical about whether the film would be acceptable to the majority of local authorities, on whose behalf the BBFC classified films. Part of the problem was the film's sexual explicitness, even in the reduced version, which exceeded the standards currently accepted for the X category. However, a more serious problem was whether the central dream sequence might raise legal issues because of its suggestion of bestiality.

James Ferman wrote to the distributor:

We see considerable problems in passing this film as it stands, although I realise you have made a few cuts of [sic] the most extreme sexual material. Certainly, there are still a great many shots which we feel might be vulnerable at law, and beyond that, there is also much footage which we feel vastly exceeds the standards accepted by the vast majority of local authorities. The problem is that, with a director of Borowczyk's stature, the cutting required might be such as to damage the film artistically, and I do not think the Board would want to become involved in a war of attrition on a film of such consequence .

The film was further pre-cut to address James Ferman's concerns of:

Cuts of 9m 55s were required to remove scenes of breath restriction during sex and dialogue references to same; hot candle wax dripping, face slapping/spitting, urolagnia and the eating and regurgitating of live worms. Further cuts required to potentially harmful references to and actual breath restriction during sex.

The cuts to Cockhounds had nothing to do with animal cruelty and nothing to do with not allowing people to eat/swallow live worms. The problem with the scene was that the woman, having swallowed the worms whole, then puts her fingers down her throat and vomits them back up. She then puts the worms, which are caked in vomit, on her breasts.

This is considered as obscene by the police/CPS. As with pissing and shitting, scenes showing vomiting or the smearing of vomit in a `sex work` make it open to prosecution.

The worms are actually a red herring and their presence was totally irrelevant (as it happens, the worms actually survived). The problem was (i) the presence of vomiting in a sex work and (ii) smearing vomit over breasts in a sex work. It`s exactly the same as with urine and excrement (which are also shown thrown around in Jackass because these are not `sex works`).

Few details are provided about the film but it is probably from the Lost in the Hood series by Edward James

The BBFC explained their ban:

Lost in the Hood is a US sex work focusing exclusively on the abduction and rape of a number of men. In each scenario, we see the predatory male characters choose a victim who appears to have become lost in the hood (ie a bad neighbourhood in the United States). They then abduct their chosen victim and force him to engage in sexual acts with them against his will. Each scene places a strong emphasis on the non consensual nature of the sex, with the victims pleading to be released, showing discomfort and making unsuccessful attempts to escape. Similarly, the perpetrators display a high level of physical and verbal aggression. By presenting the spectacle of sexual violence within the context of an explicit sex work, whose primary intention is to sexually arouse the viewer, Lost in the Hood has the effect of eroticising and endorsing sexual violence in a potentially harmful fashion.

In making a decision as to whether a video work is suitable for classification, the Board applies the criteria set out in its current Classification Guidelines, published in 2009. These are the result of an extensive process of public consultation and research and reflect the balance of media effects research, the requirements of UK law and the attitudes of the UK public. The Board's Guidelines clearly reflect the serious concerns that exist about the portrayal of sexual violence.

The Guidelines for the R18 category requested for this video work state that the following content is not acceptable: material (including dialogue) likely to encourage an interest in sexually abusive activity (for example [...] rape),the portrayal of any sexual activity which involves lack of consent (whether real or simulated),any sexual threats, humiliation or abuse which does not form part of a clearly consenting role-playing game. Strong physical or verbal abuse, even if consensual, is unlikely to be acceptable . Under the heading of Compulsory Cuts , the Board's Guidelines identify as of particular concern sexual violence or sexualised violence which endorses or eroticises the behaviour . Additionally, under the heading of Violence , the Board's Guidelines state that A strict policy on sexual violence and rape is applied. Content which might eroticise or endorse sexual violence may require cuts at any classification level [...] Any association of sex with non-consensual restraint, pain or humiliation may be cut .

Of course, the Board will always seek to deal with such concerns by means of cuts or other modifications when this is a feasible option. However, under the heading of Rejects our Guidelines state that If the central concept of a work is unacceptable (for example, a sex work with a rape theme),or if the changes required would be extensive or complex,the work may be rejected, ie refused a classification at any category .

It is the Board's carefully considered view that to issue a certificate to this work, even if confined to adults, would be inconsistent with the Board's Guidelines, would risk potential harm within the terms of the VRA, and would be unacceptable to the public.

The Board considered whether its concerns could be dealt with through cuts. However, given that the central concept of the work is unacceptable and that the unacceptable content runs throughout the work, cuts are not a viable option in this case and the work is therefore refused a classification.
