Starring Cynthia Rothrock, Siu-Ho Chin and Hoi Mang BBFC link 2020 IMDb
Exists as a shorter Hong Kong Version and a longer Export Version.

Summary Notes

Rothrock stars as Cindy, an American FBI agent who travels to Hong Kong to arrest a criminal newspaper editor, Ronny Dak (filmmaker Ronny Yu) who prints counterfeit money using the newspaper's presses (a dubious notion, but storyline is not the film's strong point). While investigating Dak's crimes, Cindy hooks up with her old friend Judy Yu (Elizabeth Lee), an undercover cop (Chin Siu-ho), and an intrepid journalist (director Mang Hoi) to battle his kung-fu henchmen.

Summary Review: Very Effective Tension

Italian thriller about a shadowy killer in black murdering fashion models through brutal methods.

One Bava's best. A great looking murder mystery that clearly laid the groundwork for later directors (DePalma in particular), and has a fun macabre sense of humor to go with some very effective tension.

Blood Bath is a 1966 USA / Yugoslavia horror by Jack Hill and Stephanie Rothman.
Starring William Campbell, Marissa Mathes and Lori Saunders. Melon Farmers link  Youtube link   IMDb
Exists in 4 versions, none of which were due to film censorship. The original film was Operation Titian, but producer Roger Corman was not impressed and it was re-worked by Jack Hill and Stephanie Rothman to add a vampire theme. The resulting version was titled Blood Bath. The 2 other variants ar TV versions of Operation Titian and Blood Bath.
Promotional Material

A crazed artist who believes himself to be the reincarnation of a murderous vampire kills young women, then boils their bodies in a vat.

The production saga began when Roger Corman invested in a Yugoslavian Krimi-like picture entitled Operation Titian just prior to it going into production. Insisting it be filmed in English, he sent actors William Campbell and Patrick Magee, and uncredited story editor Francis Ford Coppola (all fresh from Dementia 13), to Dubrovnik to make a US-friendly movie but wasn't satisfied with the end results.

First it was re-cut and re-scored to create Portrait in Terror, a film more in line with drive-in tastes, then it was handed over to Jack Hill (Spider Baby), followed by Stephanie Rothman (Terminal Island), each undertaking reshoots that resulted in a vampire picture by the name of Blood Bath.

One final twist was provided when a TV version was required, chopping scenes and adding others to create Track of the Vampire.

Summary Review: B-movie horror

The cast of a horror film go out for dinner with their director one night and they all exchange horror stories.

This a very enjoyable low budget anthology, more in keeping with the Creepshow series than the Amicus efforts. The second and third story are played for laughs for the most part, although both have agreeably twisted denouements.

Its hard to believe that the director of this film was also responsible for Bloodsucking Freaks as this is quite a restrained effort. This is a very worthy addition to the Anthology horror genre, and there's plenty of gore and laughs to be had.

A scientist, working with genetics, creates a creature that is capable of transforming back and forth between a giant Death Head moth and a beautiful woman. The creature masquerades as his daughter when she is in her human incarnation and feeds on the blood of her victims when she is in the moth form.

Instead of a sci-fi/horror picture, it is more of a detective story with some laughable horror elements. But it is a decent detective story with enough misdirection to produce several surprising revelations.

Two cannibals/health food diner owners are on a wacky quest to restore life to the five million year old goddess Shitaar. Aided by their uncle's brain and penis, the two set about getting the required parts - virgins, assorted body parts from whores, and the ingredients for a "blood buffet". Their adversaries are the police: the chief with a Russian accent, the "player" detective, and the new Yorker with an Australian accent.

One of the best horror movies of the eighties! A classic

Summary Review : Pretty Damn Cool
An utterly barebones production, flatly pathetic acting, stilted and pointless dialogue, and lots and lots of ultra-phony gore.

Of course, this is pretty undisputedly the first real gore film, so horror fans pretty much have to see this. And, even if it weren't so important historically it would be worth seeing anyway, cause it's pretty damn cool either way.

You get flaying, leg severing, heart extracting, tongue ripping, brain snatching etc. And, while the gore effects are incredibly dated, they aren't quite as cheap and old as I would have imagined. The blood itself actually holds up fairly well, and looks better than much of the stage blood you'd see over the next 20 years or so. It's actually red!

Some markets are unable to screen an unrated film. The decision to seek the MPAA rating for Blood Feast was tailored after a similar development impacted the release of Saw a few years back. So the film has been very modestly edited to conform to the film ratings standard that should make it accessible to a larger audience.

Update: 27th August 2017: Still cutting

Despite trimming the gore provided by FX guru Ryan Nicholson, after presenting the film to the MPAA for a third time, Walz has been denied the R rating he needs to get the movie into theaters.

Update: 8th September 2017: R rated

Presumably on the 4th submission, Blood Feast is now officially Rated R for strong sadistic violence and gore, language including sexual references, nudity and some drug content.

See Pictorial cuts details from movie-censorship.com :

There are 40 differences between the cut R rated version and the less cut NC-17 version adding up to a 2:19s shorter running time.

The pattern of the cuts is to remove only a few frames from the really violent shots in order to make those scenes appear less intense without having to cut the scenes entirely. In addition to that, there are some alterations - such as recuts and zooms. At the end of the day, the R-Rated Version is not recommendable at all.

Summary Review: Harmless Fun

The story of the Count trying to infiltrate the down at heel Italian nobility family is quite interesting. Dracula, the last of his family, can't find any more werrgens (as Udo Kier memorably puts it) in Romania so his servant has the idea of going to Catholic Italy, where they must be growing on trees.

In Italy he gets himself invited to visit a poor noble family and their four unmarried daughters. The parents are delighted that the allegedly rich Count may take a shine to one of their daughters and boost the family coffers. However the Count is only after virgin blood! Unfortunately thanks to Dallesandro's character the middle 2 daughters no longer qualify as virginal, though the Count has to find that out the hard way, leading to much vomiting and blood regurgitation.

The acting is pretty good. Udo Kier is more low key than in Frankenstein as the ill and melancholy vampire, though I don't think anyone can vomit blood better than he does here!

With all the blood and nudity the film shouldn't be taken too seriously but I certainly enjoyed it. Harmless fun!

Summary Review: Tragedy and Rebirth

The shooting of the film was beset by tragedy. Original star Peter Cushing had to leave the production after just one day when his wife fell ill and subsequently died. Five weeks into shooting director Seth Holt suffered a heart attack and died, leaving Hammer's managing director Michael Carreras to complete the remaining sequences.

The film was adapted from Bram Stoker's novel The Jewel of Seven Stars. It was released as the support feature to Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde

An archaeological expedition brings back to London the coffin of an Egyptian queen known for her magic powers. Her spirit returns in the form of a young girl.

The film has had a mixed reception from reviewers. It is occasionally rather slow moving and maybe a little too carelessly scripted, but it looks fantastic with great sets and props.

Originally called Muskie Madness , Troma bought the movie and changed its title to Blood Hook. Numerous cuts were made as well - almost 18 minutes are missing. Even though Troma's intention was to simply cut things out for pace reasons, the narration and character development suffer from these cuts. What really sucks for people who bought the R-Rated VHS or DVD is the missing violence.

From IMDb. Originally filmed as Echo of Terror, a straightforward heist movie, in 1964. There were no takers for distribution so several new scenes were added in 1965 (some featured actor John Carradine) and the result was a more horrific, science-fiction themed version, titled Psycho A Go-Go. But it was still unreleasable at that time. So the film was then reworked for TV. New scenes were added featuring a zombie and mad doctor subplot, featuring Tommy Kirk, Kent Taylor and Regina Carroll. From IMDB and cuts details from dvdcompare.net . The BBFC made cuts to 9 scenes:

  • edits to the opening staking
  • edits to shots of dismembered body parts in the laboratory and
  • edits to a scene where a tube is inserted into a man's neck to drain blood.
  • the infamous dungeon scene, showing potential female victims chained to a wall, was completely removed.

In the dungeon scene, in which the housekeeper (Barbara Burke) is being prepared for one of Callistratus' experiments. Carl (Victor Maddern) straps the unconscious housekeeper down onto a table. Callistratus (Sir Donald Wolfit) then steps up, ready to experiment . In the DD Home Entertainment release, the scene ends at this point. The Viewing Notes describe that in the Continental version the scene continues with Barbara Burke being threatened with a knife (in the British/American edit, she is unconscious) while two other female victims look on (they do not appear in the British/American edit).

Thanks to Tim who explains further after reading the BBFC files:

A script was submitted to the BBFC but it was missing the two controversial laboratory sequences which must have been added very late in pre production. The full strength version was submitted to the BBFC who were not impressed with the added material and producer Robert Baker was hauled into their offices to explain himself. Baker claimed that the BBFC had been sent a continental print although no domestic print was ever produced and in all likelihood never existed. More probably Baker had submitted the uncut version to see what he could get away with. Consequently, both scenes were heavily cut.

The BBFC file doesn't fully record exactly what was cut and it seems a few of the original proposed cuts were waived.

Note also that the soundtrack on the French DVD has a lot more louder screaming in the lab scenes and in Callisstratus's death than the English soundtrack.

Summary Review: Deep cultural resonances

Siblings discover that their father has their vampire mother chained up in the cellar. The mother bites her son and soon everyone in the community is either dead or a vampire.

Curse Of The Vampires is a direct follow-up to the late director Gerardo de Leon's equally compelling 1964 The Blood Drinkers. Dubbed into English and released by Hemisphere Pictures in 1971. It looked to the world like any other low budget drive-in nonsense. But de Leon, along with Romero, was a classically trained filmmaker and is enshrined as a Philippines National Artist, and thus everything he does is with purpose, from the masterful framing, composition, lighting... As a result, Curse Of The Vampires is not just a throwaway B-programmer with bloodsuckers but a serious horror film with deep cultural resonances.

Other reviewers just though it to be dull and badly made.

Cut by the BBFC for 1971 cinema release but uncut on home video.
Summary Review: Utterly compelling

Set in a remote village in 17th Century England, farm labourer Ralph Gower (Barry Andrews) accidentally stumbles across a devilish skull whilst ploughing a field. Ralph reports his findings to the Judge (Patrick Wymark) but when they return, the skull has vanished. Very soon the children of the village start acting strangely, led by Angel Blake (Linda Hayden) they form a murderous coven and when mysterious growths of hair (called the Devil's Skin) start appearing on their bodies, all hell breaks loose...... literally!

The film emerged from the legendary Tigon stable shortly after the brilliant Witchfinder General which, in many aspects, it resembles and to which it can be justifiably regarded as a companion piece. The judge/witchfinder superbly played by Patrick Wymark (Cromwell in Witchfinder General) in his final performance, is very much the hero.

The overall effect, though, is utterly compelling and, perhaps strangely given the grim subject matter, utterly beautiful. The camerawork, courtesy of the splendidly named Dick Bush, is the stuff of genius.

The star though, without a doubt, is the beautiful Linda Hayden, who plays the deliciously evil villainess Angel Blake, with an astonishing presence belying her tender age.

Review from imdb

Another in a long line of terrible straight-to-video movies. This is one of those that need to be not seen and never heard from. The only reason that I didn't give this movie a straight zero was that low budget movie queen Debbie Rochon was in the picture and she was hot to look at.

Other than that I wouldn't give it the time of day. Billy Drago looks like he drank all of his money. He could barely stand up and all he did was mumble his badly written dialog. He tries to come off like Udo Kier. But Udo's cool and he can still deliver a performance. Billy Drago was just too painful to watch. A bad movie all around that doesn't warrant a further look.

Summary Review : Eating Live Rabbits

Three married couples are forced to spend the night in a Victorian-era house where they start getting killed off by a deranged psycho who's bent on claiming an inheritence they are all entitled to.

The Ghastly Ones (aka. Blood Rites ), Andy Milligan's first horror film, is a 1968 film shot in cranium-cleaving color at his Victorian mansion on Staten Island. After a prologue in which a couple with a really large umbrella are hacked up by some guy, this movie has three daughters and their husbands at a reading of their late father's will. It is his wish that the couples spend three days in the family mansion in sexual harmony, and then they will find out who gets what from the old man. But once there the handyman is eating live rabbits, the couples start fighting, and then people start dying and showing up as the main course at dinner.

Very slow staring, but if you are loose for a high content of cheese with your blood and gore, you will not be disappointed.

Summary Notes

Texas bar owner Julian Marty, who is generally regarded as not a nice person, hires shady private detective Loren Visser, who is able to obtain what Marty requests: evidence - in this instance, photographic - that his wife, Abby, and one of his bartenders, Ray, are having an affair. As Ray and Abby realize that Marty has found out about them, it allows them to plan for their future away from Marty, while be up front with Marty about the situation. Marty, in turn, decides to hire Visser once again, this time to kill Abby and Ray, and dispose of their bodies so that they won't be found. The out in the open affair and the contract hit lead to some actions based on self interest, and a standoff of sorts between the four players, which is compounded in complexity by some wrong assumptions of what has happened, with an innocent bystander, another of the Marty's bartenders, Meurice, potentially and unwittingly adding to the scenario.

From IMDb. For the 1998 restoration, the Coen brothers not only remixed and re-recorded new sound effects for the stereo soundtrack, but made some minor trims to various scenes and dialog:
  • Maurice asking a bar patron at the jukebox what night it is and realizing it's "Yankee Night", he explains he's from Detroit, thus justifying his intervention of the patron's musical selection.
  • Ray sticking his cigarette in the stuffed warthog's nose at Marty's house, and the following lines: RAY: You gonna leave all this stuff? ABBY: It's all Marty's.
  • After Marty suggests to the P.I. the "incinerator" as a means of destroying the evidence of his proposed murder, the P.I.'s line: "Sweet Jesus, you're disgusting!" is deleted.
  • A couple lines from the landlady showing Abby the studio apartment (mainly assuring her Abby won't be bothered at that location) before she starts yelling at her ex-brother-in-law, are deleted.
  • As Marty opens his safe to retrieve the bounty money (and swap the photo) his line: "This is an illicit affair" has been removed, although he can still be seen mouthing it.
  • When the P.I. shoots Marty, a couple shots are removed of Marty and the P.I. staring at each other after the gunshot.
  • When Ray and Abby are discussing "what happened", in her studio apartment, and Ray feels cold enough to rise from his seat, the shot of him steadying the walrus piggy-bank is removed and his dialog is heard off-screen to cover this change.
  • When Abby goes to see Maurice about her concerns, the scene cuts as soon as she enters. In the original version, the scene continues and she is seen inside his place and he pours a drink while assuring her that Marty is not dead, even though she is very worried that he is. Some of the dialog from inside the house is placed over the shot outside Maurice's door before Abby goes in, in the 1998 version.
  • A new page of credits is added at the end, covering the restoration.

Review from Amazon UK : Well edited

When I got this out I wasn't expecting much at all. But I was pleasantly surprised at what I got. It is well structured film (like a real 80's style with a distinct beginning, middle and end not like crappy shallow 90's films which just meander along and feel really empty)

Daniel Bernhardt is really charming, a good fighter and looks strikingly similar to Van Damme in some shots. It has one of the best chessy training scenes like the one in kickboxer. The fight scenes are well edited and well shot, so they are easy to watch and not to close-up. For fans of 80's cheese (even if this is a 90's film) and lots of mano a mano fight scenes this should fit nicely in your collection.

Summary Notes : All Time Greats

Sardu, master of the Theatre of the Macabre, and his assistant Ralphus run a show in which, under the guise of 'magic', they torture and murder people in front of their audience. But what the punters see as a trick is actually real.

Bloodsucking Freaks , also known as The Incredible Torture Show , is one of the all time greatest sexploitation shockers ever released. This movie has everything the connoisseur of fine filth could possibly ask for! There's plenty of naked girls, bloody gore, sadistic violence, over-the-top acting, cheesy dialogue, and even a midget.

The best white-slavery ring run out of an off-off Broadway grand guignol theatre by a thespian sadist and his midget assistant movie ever made!

Everyone I've ever shown this film has been moved by it's outlandishly intense scenes. No one ever forgets the human dartboard or the brain-sucking scene. This is without a doubt one of the sickest, sleaziest, most mind-numbingly ridiculous films ever released.

Excerpts are included in the feminist documentary, Rate it X , which the BBFC passed uncut in the mid 80s. Director Joel M. Reed appears defending his film as a sophisticated black comedy.

Versions

3s 18114:27s 2006 South Korea drama by Shin-yeon Won

The BBFC cut 3s when submitted in 2009: Company was obliged to remove sight of a bird being snared and then killed.

The BBFC explained their 18 rating:

A BLOODY ARIA is a subtitled Korean drama about a music professor and his female student, who encounter four men on a remote beach. This film was classified '18' in accordance with BBFC Guidelines, for strong bloody violence. There are various fights between the men, and also a schoolboy, which result in heavily bloodied faces and injuries. Towards the end, there is a scene in which one of the main villains is beaten up by a policeman, who becomes quite sadistic, using his helmet to hit the man in the face and on the head repeatedly.

The film also contains strong language and two scenes of attempted sexual assault. The first scene involves the lecherous professor trying to have sex with his student in the car and we see his hands groping at her under her clothes, and pulling her knickers off. There is no nudity detail, and the student manages to run away. In the second scene, the student is taken into the back of the car with two men. The intent is clearly to rape her, but nothing ever happens. There is some terrorisation of the characters by their attackers, but the darkly comic tone of the work helps in some way to alleviate this.

Basically it's about a bunch of Japanese martial arts experts harassing a Chinese village on the lookout for the secret dragon herb . The Japanese face hard resistance from the Chinese fighters who run a martial arts academy up in the mountains. Unanticipated assistance in terms of fighting expertise, however, comes from a refugee on the run.

The fighting scenes are not very realistic but cool anyway. A classic!

It is not known what offended the British censor but the following discussion of a cut Italian versions may offer some suggestions. See article from movie-censorship.com :

There is a well-known violent peak in the middle of the film in which a policeman is torn apart by a hand grenade.

The rape of Dagmar is controversial. Raimund Harmstorf and Daniela Giordano apparently shot a second variant here which differs considerably from the known version. The whole montage with slaughterhouse and lesbian sex shots which were placed in the well-known theatrical version under shots of the faces and can only be seen uncensored in the long version. Dagmar still resists Klett's approaches but then succumbs to her lust during the act.

Exists in several cut versions, some with violence cut, some cut for nudity. A composite of these versions was created which is uncut. The BBFC has never cut the film itself though.
Summary Review: Educational
This is an amazing movie. It's basically an exploitation movie with the production values of an historical drama. The acting is outstanding, particularly Christopher Lee and Maria Rohm.

Blue Underground have put together a magnificent print, taking elements from the various released and unreleased versions of the movie to produced an excellent film that's never existed in this form before.

Given the patchwork history it seems like the movie should be a mess, but it all hangs together very well.

Summary Review:

Humour and repugnancy

Machine gun totin' Ma Barker lead her family gang (her sons) on a crime spree in the Depression era. Her loyal brood have every perversion imaginable. The sadistic Herman sleeps with his Ma and Lloyd Barker is a spaced-out drug addict who sniffs glue.

It's a morbidly colourful mixture of negative southern poor white trash stereotypes, encapsulated in a family of sociopaths, with a vintage Shelly Winters bringing her trademark intensity to the role of Ma Barker and a great cast as her sons.

A mishmash of humour and repugnancy, it's definitely not for the squeamish.

Summary Review: Dumb Victims
This movie is basically the infamous Jess Franco having a go at the American-style slasher films that were big in the early 80's, and what's most remarkable about it is how unremarkable it is. It's pretty violent, but except for one nasty knife exit wound there's nothing here that hasn't been done in hundreds of American slasher movies.

It's set at an adult Spanish-language school which seems to cater exclusively to incredibly dumb and slutty German and Scandinavian women.

The girls are being stalked by two of the reddest herrings imaginable. One is a burnt youth in a Mickey Mouse mask. The other is a gardener who is always laughing maniacally and coincidentally wielding the exact same implement that has just been used to kill the latest victim.

The best thing I can say about this movie it is it is so over-the-top with its dumb victims, obvious red herrings, and ridiculously gory murders that it might have actually meant to be a parody of the slasher film.

Summary Review:

Pyschovision

A photographer and his models go to an old, abandoned castle to shoot some sexy covers for horror novels. Tragically for them, the castle is inhabited by a lunatic and closet torturer.

Bloody Pit of Horror is one weird Gothic horror film with a creepy castle, a legend of a ruthless torturer promising vengeance from the grave, and really cool instruments of death lying round in abundance. It was even filmed in Psychovision .

On the negative side reviewers have found the plot silly and/or just weird. But on the whole the positives have outweighed the negatives and the general result is very much thumbs up.

Always uncut in the UK but several US releases have been cut.

In 1966, Michelangelo Antonioni ( L'avventura ) transplanted his existentialist ennui to the streets of swinging London for this international sensation, the Italian filmmaker's English-language debut. A countercultural masterpiece about the act of seeing and the art of image making, Blow-Up takes the form of a psychological mystery, starring David Hemmings ( Deep Red ) as a fashion photographer who unknowingly captures a death on film after following two lovers in a park. Antonioni's meticulous aesthetic control and intoxicating color palette breathe life into every frame, and the jazzy sounds of Herbie Hancock, a beautifully evasive performance by Vanessa Redgrave ( Howards End ), and a cameo by the Yardbirds make the film a transporting time capsule from a bygone era. Blow-Up is a seductive immersion into creative passion, and a brilliant film by one of cinema's greatest artists.

Jeffrey Amber (John Damon) jumps to his death and the police have no problem thinking that it was suicide. His friends gather shortly after his death and discuss their last moments with him and we slowly begin to wonder whether it was suicide or murder.

The entire mystery is played out via RASHOMON style and it simply doesn't work because you don't care about the lead character, his friends or any of the adventures that they had together. There are a lot of sex scenes scattered throughout and a little bit of nudity but none of this is all that interesting either.

Towards the end of the movie we get some rather bizarre Satanic scenes that are certainly the highlight of the picture.
