UK: The film has been shown uncut at London's Imperial War Museum, as part of an exhibition of war atrocities.

Australia: Passed R18 uncut by the Review Board in April 1989 after a successful appeal against bening banned in March 1989. The Review Board explained its decision:

Thanks to Ben for the update. See article from refused-classification.com

The Board of Review was divided on this appeal. The guidelines for film classification prohibit unduly detailed and/or relished acts of extreme violence or cruelty. That the violence in Man Behind the Sun is both detailed and extreme cannot be denied; whether it is unduly detailed, whether the acts can be said to be relished, is open to question. Man Behind the Sun is ostensibly, and at least in part, a documentary. The question therefore arises: what constitutes undue detail in a documentary about war and its atrocities?

The Board took the view that the word unduly in the context allows- and was intended to allow-a certain flexibility in the interpretation of the guidelines, particularly in cases where the presentation of violent acts may be thought to be justified by the intentions of the film and the circumstances in which the act is committed. A majority concluded that in a film specifically concerned with documented instances of atrocities and inhumanity, depictions of extreme cruelty can be justified, and may indeed be necessary to the filmmaker's purposes. In considering Man Behind the Sun, the majority took account of the film's strong anti-war message and the reaction of most of the characters in the film to the experiments they are forced to witness. Far from suggesting relish, the film provokes-and depicts-a powerful sense of revulsion.

The cut scene was an unsimulated scene of a cat being thrown into a room full of rats, the rats killing the cat.

The video was given a limited release to UK ethenic Chinese video stores only (which probably goes some way to explain why the BBFC treated it so leniently, its' re-enactments of WWII atrocities make Saving Private Ryan look like an episode of The A Team).

Australia: Banned in March 1989 but the ban was overturned on appeal.

Censor John Dickie spoke of the ban:

Exploitative violence for its own sake, it was not necessarily part of the progression of telling the story. That's where it becomes a bit subjective, I agree, and there aren't too many films that are like that. But if Schindler's had been a film where they tried to recreate the full horror of the actual execution in the gas chambers, and things like that, you would have to look very carefully at the scene and say, is this absolutely necessary to the thing or is it just a gratuitous scene to appeal to some violence freaks? And that's something you can only really judge in the context of the film. But they're the principles that tend to guide us.

Summary Review: Well Above Average

Noon is a gunfighter who has become amnesiac. Helped by Rimes, an outlaw who has befriended him, he tries to figure out who he is actually. It gradually appears that his wife and kid have been murdered.

It is far from perfect but is certainly lifted well above the average Spaghetti nonsense by a director with flair and imagination. The film boasts a good clear picture quality reflecting well on the restoration work.

A remake of The Man in Half Moon Street.

A mad doctor plans to live forever through periodic gland transplants from younger, healthier human victims.

Jimmy Sangster's screenplay based on the Barre Lyndon play tends to be heavy on the melodrama and short on the thrills.

Some stylish direction from Fisher and Christopher Lee in a supporting role and good acting on hand from Hazel Court and others.

Summary Review: Amazing
Mandingo is truly an amazing movie. One would think that this is as close you can get to actually seeing the slave-owning south on film.

Mandingo is probably lumped into the "cult/camp classic" category because this is a film no one would dare make today, unless the slaves got a major comeuppance at the end. They do not here.

This film is a brutal look at slave owners and their slaves which will leave the audience gasping. Some of the lines are so daring by today's politically-correct standards, there's no doubt they'd get a lot of laughs.

Summary Review: Breathtaking

The second film in Fernando Di Leo's Milieu trilogy of Milano Calibro 9, La Mala Ordina aka. Manhunt and Il Boss .

An excellent and breathtaking crime epic that no lover of Italian genre-cinema could possibly afford to miss.

The tough-minded and violent film is breathtaking from the beginning to the end and profits from a brilliant cast.

Fernando Di Leo's films are said to be the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's early films

Summary review: Shocking
This is definitely a film that will leave you thinking. The main reason being the main character Frank Zito aka Joe Spinell plays the most realistic psycho/deranged person I've ever seen on film. The whole time I was thinking is this guy really insane? Either this guy is a genius actor or he's really nuts. That's how real he is in this role. His presence will creep you out. He's the biggest weirdo I've ever seen on film.

The story focuses on frank the serial killer and his killings and insanity. Some of the scenes are gruesome, but they will keep you on the edge of your seat. You will be able to put yourself in both franks shoes and feel the victims terror as she is stalked and hides from Frank... Especially the subway bathroom scene. That's an intense scene. Frank keeps on killing till the end when his own demons finally come back to haunt him.

Any horror fan should have this in their collection.

rejectedUK: The Theatrical Version was banned by the BBFC for:
  • 1998 Exploited VHS
  • 1981 cinema release

The BBFC explained the 1998 ban:

Two (of the videos rejected so far in 1998) were serial killer films in which sex is linked with the pleasure of killing. In one of those films, Maniac, a series of defenceless women are stalked, terrorised, attacked and murdered, while being photographed in a deliberately sexualised way. The film is one of a genre known as 'stalk and slash', and here each stalking and killing is protracted, sometimes ending with the scalping of the victim. When the police eventually catch up with the killer, he survives, leaving us to anticipate that the stalking and mutilation will begin again. The pleasures on offer here seem to the Board to be unhealthy and dangerous because of the way that the killing of women is linked with the sexual arousal of men.

Gossip has it that Maniac was initially viewed by four censors; three men and one woman. The three men said the film should be rejected because of its anti-women depictions. The woman thought the film was cut-able.

Elijah Wood stars in this remake of director William Lustig's 1980 horror classic of the same name. To say that Frank (Wood) is a troubled young man would be an understatement - as the ever-growing number of young women he has murdered since the death of his mother (America Olivo), with whom he enjoyed an unhealthily close relationship, demonstrates only too well. Frank runs a mannequin store and likes to apply the scalps of his victims to the models in his spare time. However, when beautiful young artist Anna (Nora Arnezeder) wanders into the store and talks about making use of its resources for an exhibition she is planning, she presents Frank with a troubling quandary. Anna appears to offer the possibility of a human relationship that will fill the void created by his mother's death, but she also excites his desire to kill and possess. Will Frank be able to overcome his homicidal urges?

Now, with few friends, powerful enemies and a psychopathic slayer still at large, it's up to Jack to prove he's not guilty and bring down the killer.

This film has a good B-movie cast with Tom Atkins, Richard Roundtree and Bruce Campbell.

Some good tension is built up in the various chases around the city and overall this is definitely worth a watch.

Review from UK Amazon : Scandalous in the 60's

Don't enter the tent if you're expecting a steamy lesbian brief encounter.

What unfolds here is the depiction of need, fantasy, wish fulfillment and the use of allure to entice weakness and then to smash those lives upon the sharpened stakes of feminine guile.

The bored middle class housewife finds fantasy and reality in her art class friend, her saviour and her mortal danger. Her muse senses the need and draws her into her web. Initially entailing the victim to make small sacrifices until they become larger and larger to prove her love. Ending with the demand to enter oblivion at the behest of the siren.

It is slow placed, shot using various focal settings, capturing the essence of the claustrophobic worlds of need, desire and the avenging angel.

The naked bodies, scandalous in the 60's, now in an age of image bombardment, have a diminished potency. The beauty of the protagonist still projects as does her guile.

A topless dancer attracts, seduces, then murders the men she sleeps with using household tools.

This little gem is one of the first key films to combine gore with sleaze. Groovy 60s psychedelia, go-go dancers, sexploitation and horror, all beautifully photographed by Laszlo Kovacs, collide in a kaleidoscope of color and LSD laden sensibilities.

Not to everyone's tastes though, but Susan Stewart will win a few converts.

Summary Review: Cheese and sleaze!
Not exactly a straight slasher as many believe but it's surely as cheesy, and unintentionally funny as any slasher from the 80's.

Mardi Gras Massacre could be considered as a toned down exploitation low budget. The plot asks for brutality, violence, sleaze but the truth is that the execution of the idea isn't as half as good as it should.

The ritual method is repeated in all the death scenes. So we don't get originality or probably there wasn't enough budget to at least create three different gore scenes. It's okay but even ultra low budget slashers have at least two different killing methods! Anyways, Mardi Gras Massacre has generated some kind of cult over the years but sincerely, this isn't a must see. The movie should only be watched by b-movie lovers or morbid fans of low budget cheese and sleaze!

Only the additional scenes make a real difference because they contain new story elements now and then. For instance, one gets to see of more Lisa at acting school, more background information about in Joan's conversations with Ramon and Lisa's pregnancy / abortion is not only vagely mentioned but actually shown as well. But these are just a tiny part of the differences. The extended scenes contains lots of unspectacular footage which has been most likely been cut from the Theatrical Version for pace reasons.

Summary Review: Atmospheric Euro Horror

Udo Kier is a witch hunter apprentice to Herbert Lom. He believes strongly in his mentor and the ways of the church but loses faith when he catches Lom strangling Reggie Nalder to death for calling him impotent. Kier begins to see for himself that the witch trials are nothing but a scam of the church to rob people of their land, money, and other personal belongings of value and seduce beautiful big breasted women.

This film contains very strong graphic torture including a women's tongue being ripped out of her head, nuns being raped (in the opening credits), and lots of beatings.

Back in its day, this film was probably the most controversial movie ever made as it depicted the witch trials going on Europe during the darkest page of human existence.

The entire cast gives it their all and makes this film believable. The only hindrance is the dubbing, but for foreign horror film fans like me, dubbing just adds to the charm.

I was pleasantly surprised and got a much better film than I was expecting. If you're a fan of atmospheric Euro horror, don't believe all the bad hype as this film is a true gem.

Summary Review: Favourite

Chicago DEA agent John Hatcher has just returned from Colombia, where his partner was killed in the line of duty by a drug dealer who has since been taken down. As a result of his partner's death, John has decided to retire, but his retirement may not be permanent.

The film has some terrific action sequences and set pieces, example being the shopping centre fight which really showcases Seagal's talents. This has excellent pacing as well as good location shoots. The score for Marked for Death is amazing, suiting the film so well, giving it the right sinister kind of atmosphere. The voodoo elements were cool, Screwface has to be one of the best villains and the twist at the end is unexpected.

Summary Review : Pretty Tame

Justine tells the tale of two beautiful sisters, Juliette, an amoral nymphomaniac, and Justine, who seeks a life of chastity and virtue. Unfortunately for Justine, while her depraved sister finds nothing but success and happiness, she suffers constant despair and abuse, being raped, tortured, whipped, and accused of theft amongst umpteen other disasters during her turbulent young life.

This tale isn't bad, and fairly explicit, for the late 60's, but is still pretty tame, by today's standards. It has a weird appearance by Jack Palance, as a mad monk. Also, a limited appearance by the late Klaus Kinski.

Summary Notes

Wander the Internet or your neighborhood and it's clear: throughout our culture, much of what was true 20 years ago is not necessarily the case now. Our relationships, romantic and otherwise, are in many ways beginning to reflect these new realities. Set against the vivid, natural beauty of Northern California and San Francisco, Marriage 2.0 follows a couple (India Summer and Ryan Driller) on their search for personal freedom, emotional and sexual bliss within the context of an honest and committed modern relationship. What makes Marriage 2.0 a different kind of relationship movie is its frankness; for all the pleasures of open relationships, jealousy and vulnerability do not magically disappear. This love letter to San Francisco - the cultural epicenter of the alternative relationship movement - suggests that the ideas of growth, novelty, and sexual adventure can exist within a millennial marriage. Marriage 2.0 tells a story both timely and universal.

George Romero does for vampires what he has already done to zombies - an intense and realistic treatment that follows the exploits of Martin, who claims to be 84 years old, and who certainly drinks human blood. The boy arrives in Pittsburg to stay with his uncle, who promises to save Martin's soul and destroy him once he is finished, but Martin's loneliness finds other means of release.

The new DVD/Blu-Ray is the first fully uncut, extended version of the film to be available. The irony, upon seeing the restored scenes, is how they actually feed into the surprisingly righteous conclusion of the film.

The film was hit with heavy censorship. In the U.S, the Catholic Legion of Decency sent a list of changes. The Legion of Decency bemoaned the Satanism and erotic costuming on the screen. Hazel Court's Juliana dedicates herself to the service of Satan and receives the ultimate payoff. While most of Juliana's satanic invocation was left in, censors wanted the word Alleluia removed. The U.S. version also censored the film's climax. When the Man in Red is talking with Prince Prospero, the dialogue was changed from Each man creates his own God for himself. His own Heaven -- his own Hell to Each man creates his own Heaven -- his own Hell.

Some of the cuts had nothing to do with blasphemous ideology. The tiny dancer Esmeralda is played on camera by young actor Verina Greenlaw, but her dialogue was dubbed over by an adult woman. One unsettling scene was removed from the U.S. version because it seemed Esmerelda's relationship with Hop Toad was more than friendship. Corman also cut nine frames from the scene where Francesca is stripped down and thrown into a bathtub because it gave the illusion of nudity. The removed frames ensured Asher's breasts would not appear on screen.

From IMDB. Cut in the US allegedly to appease the Catholic Legion of Decency, which eliminates the following:

  • a moment of blasphemy as Asher begs Price, in God's name, to spare her father and lover ('I beg of you mercy! Mercy in the name of God!') and, in response, is slapped in the face (Intact in the 2-disc German release). The 'in the name of God' portion was removed.
  • 1 second of nudity as Asher is thrown into the bathwater
  • The dialogue scene with Hop Toad telling the tiny Esmerelda that she will not be struck again was cut as it rather suggested that their relationship featured lots of suggestive touching, eg "Touched me with affection and love"
  • A dialogue was cut with Francesca describing a nightmare: A room, a black room with candles burning. It was full of death and destruction and evil.
  • A final shot of Prospero talking to a man shrouded in red saying: Each man creates his own God for himself. Presumably this was considered blasphemous

Uncle Tak wants Jet Li, his best student, to come over from China to help. Jet is not familiar with the American way of life, but knows how to fight.

The film is played out mainly as comedy but is a bit slow and only really gets serious in the final 20 minutes. Jet Li is as good as he always is in the fight sequences.

  • 1999 cinema release

The BBFC cuts were to remove 8 headbutts to tone the film down from 18 to a requested 15. Thanks to Draven for the suggested layout: the cut shots are shown in bold:

  1. Fight sequence where the rebel leader, Morpheus (Larry Fishborne), is captured. The scene starts with Morpheus landing on top of Agent Smith in the bathroom. after which they introduce themselves to one another. Smith then squeezes Morpheus's knuckles as he moves Morpheus's hands away from his neck. Morpheus then headbutts him as this is all he can do. After this, Smith grabs him by the collar and simultaneously headbutts him three times in a row after which he punches him in the chest. This throws Morpheus back against the wall behind as per the shitty British version.
  2. Fight scene with Neo in the train station. Towards the beginning of the fight, there is a shot where Agent Smith kicks Neo which makes him float sideways in the air and then punches him into the wall. Neo gets up after kicking away Smith. He then attacks Smith via punching him in a cool martial arts manner . As this is happening, agent smith locks Neo by both his arms and headbutts him twice.
  3. Later in the same fight scene. After Neo is hurled away into the air after one of Agent Smith's punches at which point he spits out blood (both in the scene and in his chair), he gets up and entices Smith towards him via hand gestures. after this he trades punches with Smith and then reverses the arm block back to Smith and headbutts him twice in much the same way that had been done to him a little earlier. Neo then punches Smith in the chin and does the four cool kicks in the air and chokes Smith when he sticks his fingers out into his throat when his punch is blocked.

Cinema version should theoretically be the same as the video version but as Dave points out:

I can confirm that The Matrix played uncut in several regions of the North West in England and in some cases with different scenes. In the Furness region in Cumbria North of England there was an additional scene when Neo stumbles upon Mouse doing some inventive programming on 'The Woman in Red' by making her breasts bigger in his software program on screen for better 'Cyber sex' manipulation.

This scene was deleted in all international versions (including the R rated print) and runs about 15 seconds with dialogue, but for some strange reason was included in our region's showing along with the 10 seconds of headbutts and violence. This had been confirmed by several friends who saw the film at that time. I also viewed The matrix in Manchester and it played the uncut R print minus the Cyber sex scene.

UK: [2D + 3D formats] passed 12A for frequent moderate threat, violence after BBFC advised category cuts were made for:

  • 2015 cinema release

The BBFC commented:

This work was originally seen for advice. The company was advised that the film was likely to receive a 15 certificate but that their preferred 12A classification could be achieved by making some changes. The company was advised:

  • to reduce moments of threat and horror involving zombie-like characters [Cranks], and
  • to reduce the focus on injury in a scene in which a man [Marcus] is beaten for information.

When the film was formally submitted, changes had been made and, consequently, the film was passed 12A.

The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials received 21 complaints in 2015. The BBFC commented in its 2015 Annual Report:

There were 21 complaints about violence and threat in The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Scenes include gangs of people operating in a lawless environment, and infected zombie-like people attacking other characters.

The distributor sought advice on how to secure the classification it was aiming to achieve. The BBFC advised that the film was likely to receive a 15 certificate but a 12A classification could be achieved by making some changes, including reducing moments of threat and horror involving zombie-like characters, and reducing the focus on injury in a scene in which a man is beaten for information. When the film was formally submitted for classification, these changes had been made and, consequently, the film is within the Guidelines at 12A where moderate physical and psychological threat is permitted, as long as horror sequences are not too frequent or sustained and the overall tone is not disturbing.

See article from movie-censorship.com . 17 cuts were made via cuts, replacement or reframing, adding up to 41s of missing material

UK: The International Version was passed 12 uncut for moderate violence, threat, language for:
Note that disk extras for the 2018 home video release have been cut with 20s of bad language missing from the gag reel to avoid a 15 rating.

Somewhat unusually the home video release appears uncut at the same age rating as the cut cinema version. The cuts for the cinema version were not made for specific violent scenes, just for overall scariness. Perhaps the BBFC felt that the film is not so scary on the small screen and so the cinema cuts were not required.

Thanks to Stuart who suggests that maybe the cuts were made thinking of the under 12s at a cinema screening who are allowed if accompanied by adults. The 12 rating for home video does not consider under 12s.

And thanks to Jon who suggests that it's more to do with the aural experience of a film in a cinema, compared to watching it on TV at home. The violence won't seem quite as visceral or shocking in a home setting.
